Is fake paneer becoming a major health risk in India?

The rising concern over adulterated or “fake” paneer is drawing serious attention across India. Reports suggest that in many local markets, paneer made from starch, detergent, and other harmful chemicals is being sold to unsuspecting consumers. These imitation products not only lack nutritional value but pose serious health risks like stomach infections, kidney issues, and long-term toxicity. In a country where paneer is a staple for many vegetarians and an essential part of everyday meals, this growing menace is deeply alarming.

While FSSAI and local health departments conduct occasional raids, enforcement still seems too weak to stop the larger network behind food adulteration. Consumers often can’t tell real from fake paneer just by looking. As demand for paneer grows, so does the temptation for unethical shortcuts. Should stricter laws and better testing facilities be a national priority to protect public health?
