Artificial food colors, flavors, and preservatives are increasingly used to make food more appealing and last longer, especially in processed snacks, sweets, and drinks. But health experts warn that overconsumption of these additives can lead to allergies, hyperactivity in children, and even cancer in the long term. Festive sweets, bright pickles, and neon-colored drinks are often loaded with non-permitted additives.
While FSSAI has banned several chemicals, enforcement is weak, especially in local markets. Consumers are often unaware of what they’re eating. Should public awareness campaigns be launched, or is stricter labeling and random product testing the better solution?
